Taizé

"Nothing is more conducive to a communion with the living God than a meditative common prayer with, as its high point, singing that never ends and that continues in the silence of one's heart when one is alone again." Brother Roger of Taizé

Come fill your heart with song as Waverly UCC holds its first Taizé service on Wednesday, October 5th at 7:30 in the sanctuary. We will continue with Taizé services the 1st Wednesday of each month.

Taizé, the name of a town in eastern France, is also a style of worship practiced by the religious community centered there. In 1940, the man now known as Brother Roger moved from Switzerland to France and settled near the small town of Taizé. During WWII, he helped Jews and German refugees and ministered to people of that area. Gradually, other men came to join him and eventually they formed a religious community dedicated to reconciliation among peoples. They practice a simple lifestyle and kindheartedness. At present, there are 100 brothers at Taizé from both Catholic and various Protestant backgrounds - representing 25 countries. They take vows and live by their work.

People travel to worship with the Taizé community from all over the world all year long. However, in summer there may be as many as 5000 young people from 75 countries living and praying there. The community gathers three times a day for prayer - worshiping God in singing and in silence. The songs are like meditative chants - sung over and over to allow the words to resonate deep within so that the song becomes a prayer.

We invite you to join us on the first Wednesday of every month as we turn song into prayer and silence into Spirit-filled space.
