Waverly is very excited to welcome Pastor Sara to begin her ministry at Waverly this Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016!
I’m a third generation Oregonian. I was raised on 10 acres near Newberg, Oregon (wine country!). My dad is a retired dentist and my mom is a retired elementary school teacher and administrator, she also has a masters in counseling. My family includes my partner of 7 years, Kat O’Boyle, and our two children, Ingrid (6 1/2) and Severin (4). Kat has a background in social work and organic farming, and is currently studying to be a nurse. My siblings and parents live close and we often gather to eat well and enjoy each other’s company. I love to write, hike, and practice yoga. Recently, I took up the ukulele. I work hard to balance work with self-care and family life.
Spiritually I’m grounded in my Quaker upbringing, I also draw from the rich UCC tradition and love the stories of saints and mystics. I’m influenced by other faith traditions, especially buddhism. I’ve studied at Earlham College (BA), Iliff School of Theology in Denver (MDiv) and University of Denver (MSW). I’m almost finished with my PhD in Theology and Women and Gender Studies. My dissertation focuses on queer theologies of vulnerability and failure as applied to contemporary theology of the church.
I have been a member of the UCC since 2005 and was ordained by the Metro Denver Association in 2013. For the past three years I have been the assistant minister at First Congregational, Portland. At First Church I supported family and children ministries, new experimental worship gatherings, spiritual formation in small groups, and new member development. I’m passionate about public theology, spiritual formation, and helping church communities thrive. I believe there is a deep need for an authentic spacious Christianity which invites people into spiritual formation, discipleship, and practices of justice. My passion is to be part of leading a wholehearted revolution of Christian community. Waverly UCC seems like a great fit for this work!
